Resource stocks bounce back as commodities rally
Handful of shares end up their daily limits in Shanghai

HONG KONG (MarketWatch) -- Asian markets began the week on a positive note, as investors bought into resource stocks such as China's Zhongjin Gold Co. as well as Australia's BHP Billiton and Woodside Petroleum on hopes that commodities prices may be supported by firm demand.
China's Shanghai Composite, which tracks both the yuan-denominated A-shares and foreign currency-denominated B shares, climbed 1.8% on Monday to 3,761.01, as trading resumed for the first time since the middle of last week. In Shenzhen, the All Share index jumped 2.9% to 1,129.99.
Hong Kong indexes, however, weren't much helped by the gains in Shanghai, moving in a narrow band and finishing lower. The benchmark Hang Seng Index slipped 0.2% to 26,183.95, while the Hang Seng China Enterprises Index, or H-share index, was virtually unchanged, off a modest 0.04% to 14,625.28.
"The A-shares may have a greater momentum than the H-shares in the short term," said Castor Pang, strategist at Sun Hung Kai Financial in Hong Kong. A-shares, which have traditionally commanded a valuation premium of 50% or more over their H-share counterparts, are now trading at narrower premiums, Pang noted.
Hong Kong stocks were likely to consolidate for a few days, Pang said, pointing out they've "gone up too much over the past two weeks." The Hang Seng faced major resistance around the 26,600-26,800 range and required "some very positive events" to penetrate that level, he added.
The decline came as investors in Hong Kong shrugged off Chinese state media reports that the mainland's securities regulator will allow fund-management companies from the mainland to establish offices in Hong Kong, effective immediately.
Japanese and South Korean markets were closed for a holiday.
Australia's S&P/ASX 200 index gained 0.5% to 5,730.30, on top of a 2.1% jump scored on Friday, while New Zealand's NZX 50 index rose 0.5% to 5,730.30.
In the afternoon, India's Sensitive Index rose 0.2% to 17,641.22, with the broader S&P/CNX Nifty little changed at 5,227.55.
Elsewhere, Singapore's Straits Times Index advanced 0.5% to 3,250.79 and Philippines' PSE Composite gained 1.1% to 2,752.93, but Taiwan's Weighted index finished 1.4% down at 8,837.07.
Meanwhile, fund outflows from the region have reversed in April, according to analysts.
In a report, Citigroup analysts cited data from EPFR Global to note that "compared with the average net redemption of $4 billion per month in the first quarter, net inflows of $5.4 billion last month were the largest both year-to-date and over the past six months."
Investors' risk appetite has also improved, with $5.8 billion flowed into all-emerging emerging-market funds in the last two weeks, compared with continuous outflows from global funds, they added.
Resourceful action
Resource stocks boosted Shanghai and Sydney, after prices of commodities such as crude oil and gold bounced in New York on Friday following a round of correction in the early part of the week.
"Fed pause, U.S. dollar rally, commodity reversal. This is the consensus thinking on the chain of events that lies before us, and in the short term, it makes good sense," wrote Merrill Lynch in a recent note.
"Longer term, however, there is more to commodities than a weak U.S. dollar and flight from financial assets. Cash-rich nations can afford to subsidize commodities prices at home, while securing future access to resources overseas."
Leading the gains, shares of gold miner Zhongjin Gold Co., Zijin Mining Group Co. and Shandong Gold-Mining Co. soared by their daily upper limit of 10% in Shanghai. Shares of Aluminum Corp. of China (ACH:aluminum corp china ltd spon adr h shs ACH 42.60, +0.37, +0.9%) jumped 6.3%, while PetroChina Co. (PTR:petrochina co ltd sponsored adr PTR 156.97, +4.12, +2.7%) advanced 0.6%, reversing early losses.
Shares of Angang Steel Co. (HK:347: news, chart, profile) gained 4% in Hong Kong, moving higher on a Financial Times report the world's largest steelmaker ArcelorMittal (MT:arcelormittal sa luxembourg ny registry shMT 89.15, +1.55, +1.8%) has held informal talks on cooperating with the steel firm to increase the latter's presence in China. ArcelorMittal is world's largest steelmaker.
